The spirit of crossing borders followed Astor Piazzolla throughout his whole life, and he created a synthesis between the traditional danced tango of Argentina and influences from classical music and jazz in his compositions, his so-called "Tango Nuevo". Come join us in an exploration of how the classical world came into Piazzolla's own, and the incredible influence his music had on composers as far flung as Russia and Georgia.

The artists performing on this program will include prominent Bay Area Tango Bandoneonista, Seth Asarnow and versatile San Francisco Guitarist, John Imholz. They will be joined by San Antonio Symphony Associate Concertmaster, Ertan Torgul, Symphony Silicon Valley Principal Bassist, Bill Everett, and Pianist, Aileen Chanco.

poeme

"In the forefront was Lucy Shelton, a new-music diva if there ever was one, performing with fire, sensitivity, astounding surety of pitch, and what seemed like love abounding." -The Boston Globe. Pianist Stephen Gosling is a ubiquitous presence on the New York new music scene and his playing has been hailed as "brilliant, electric, luminous and poised" -New York Times, possessing "utter clarity and conviction" -Washington Post, and "extraordinary virtuosity" -Houston Chronicle.

Proudly presenting Lucy Shelton, Stephen Gosling and Cynthia Mei in a moving program of 20th Century works that evoke the emotional breadth of 19th Century Romanticism. George Crumb's breathtaking “Apparition: Elegiac Songs and Vocalises for Voice and Amplified Piano," Heitor Villa-Lobos "Suite for Voice and Violin" (1923) and Olivier Messiaen's passionate cycle of metaphysical love songs, "Poème pour Mi" (1936) are featured.

Romance and the double bass

This Valentines weekend, celebrate the music of 19th Century Romanticism with a twist. Music at the Mission and Music@Market are bringing to the forefront an instrument often found in the background. "Romance and the Double Bass?!" features bay area virtuoso and Principal Bassist of Symphony Silicon Valley, Bill Everett along with Pianist, Aileen Chanco. This program covers the breadth of 19th Century Romantic music from the virtuosic to the expressive.

On the program are pieces by Giovanni Bottessini and Adolph Misek. who came from the golden era of the performer-composer, when soloists performed their own compositions alongside those of the masters. Also included on the program are Everett's own arrangements of war horses from the cello repertoire by Brahms and Rachmaninoff. Hoping to shed new light on music that has been performed by a myriad of cellists, Everett's approach to these pieces strives to make use of the bass in new ways, not so apparent or even possible on the cello.

Adorno

"...a beautiful, blazing performance by the ADORNO Ensemble, a crackerjack new music band that plays with conviction and vitality and blows the dust off classical music." -San Jose Mercury News. First place winner of the 2007 ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, the ADORNO Ensemble is named after German philosopher Theodor Adorno.

In "Traveling Polyhymnia", ADORNO journeys on a sacred path with sounds of the spirit from Buddhism to Azerbaijani culture. The program features a work by Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov, whose work merges sounds of Jewish mysticism with contemporary music; a new work by composer, Kurt Erickson, "Faith", inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi; Chinese composer Zhou Long's work, "Ding" or "Samadhi" (in Sanskrit) is a musical depiction of the perfect concentration of thought into the one object of meditation; and finally, a work by Azerbaijan composer, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh whose music is rarely heard in the United States. "Aspheron Quintet" is a dramatic fusionof Azerbaijani traditions with western music.
