Bicentennial Celebration

In 2003, the San Jose Cathedral Foundation will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph. Civic and community leaders, friends of the Cathedral and
others will join in this year-long celebration in observance of this significant milestone in the history of San Jose. Following is a listing of the events planned for the Bicentennial Celebration. For further information, contact Nina Tranchina at (408) 283-8100, ext. 2210.

February 2003

The Bicentennial Concert - An Evening with Frederica von Stade
Saturday, February 22, 2003

7:00 p.m.
The Bicentennial Concert, featuring renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, will kick-off
the year-long Bicentennial Celebration of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph. A VIP reception with the artist will be held at the San Jose Museum of Art immediately following the concert. Open to the general public. Admission is $75/150.

March 2003

Mass honoring Cathedral Marriages
Saturday, March 15, 2003

10:00 a.m.
In commemoration of the Bicentennial, the Most Reverend Patrick J. McGrath, Bishop of San Jose, invites all those married at Saint Joseph’s throughout its long history to celebrate mass in the Cathedral. A reception will immediately follow in Loyola Hall. Reserved seating is required.

Saint Joseph’s Table
Wednesday, March 19, 2003

12:05 p.m.
Celebrating in the Italian tradition of the Feast of Saint Joseph, a mass in the Cathedral Basilica
of Saint Joseph will be immediately followed by a luncheon in Loyola Hall for the downtown
homeless and local business community. Food and entertainment will be provided free of charge.

April 2003

Youth Celebration
Saturday, April 12, 2003

1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
In commemoration of the Bicentennial, a rally and festivities celebrating the youth of the Diocese
of San Jose will be held on the grounds of the Cathedral. Music, inspiration and food will be
provided free of charge. Entertainment includes Jesse Manibusan, singer, songwriter and
inspirational speaker. Closed to the general public.

July 2003

Bicentennial Weekend
Friday, July 11 - Sunday, July 13, 2003

Parishioners of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph are invited to attend a weekend of
festivities in commemoration of the Cathedral’s Bicentennial. A concert featuring the Cathedral
Choir will be held on the evening of Friday, July 11th, followed by a parish mass on Saturday,
July 12th. On Sunday, July 13th, the Cathedral grounds will serve as the backdrop for a family
festival featuring food, music and activities for all ages. Open to parishioners of Saint Joseph’s.

October 2003

Bicentennial Cathedral Ball
Saturday, October 25, 2003

6:00 p.m. Prayer Service
7:00 p.m. Cocktails
8:00 p.m. Dinner
An enchanting evening of dinner and entertainment at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose will serve
as the highlight of the Bicentennial year. An Interfaith Prayer Service, commemorating the
Cathedral’s 200-year history in San Jose, will immediately precede the Ball and include leaders from the various denominations within the community.

November 2003

Bicentennial Mass
Saturday, November 22, 2003

4:30 p.m.
The Most Reverend Patrick J. McGrath, Bishop of San Jose, invites the Bishops of Northern
California to celebrate mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in commemoration of the
Cathedral’s 200th anniversary. A reception will immediately follow in Loyola Hall. Attendance is
by invitation only.

December 2003

Season of Hope Performance Series
December 12 - 23, 2003

7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. (nightly)
The 8th Annual Season of Hope Performance Series will feature performances by local artists in
the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph twice nightly from December 12th - 23rd. Each evening is
dedicated to the work of Office of Social Ministry, a project of the San Jose Cathedral Foundation that provides for those in need of food, shelter, clothing, medical care and employment. Open to the general public. Admission is free of charge.
